On August 10th 1954, 1st LT. Ralph A. Sala, a Marine Aviator, was buried at sea from the Magoffin. These are photos of that ceremony.
Editor's note: It is my understanding that Lt. Sala was killed in an airplane crash and had requested to be buried at sea. While I haven't been able to definitely confirm any information about any of his history or background, my research shows that Ralph Sala was raised in Lodi, California and graduated from Stanford University in 1950. While at Stanford he won the 440- yard freestyle in the NCAA Men's Swimming Championships and is a member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame.
